Naturalist and long-time exhibition artist Stephen C. Quinn tells the story of his “all-time Museum hero,” Frank M. Chapman, who worked in the Ornithology Department from 1888 to 1942. Chapman’s career is a litany of firsts: first curator of birds at the Museum, writer of the first field guides to birds, creator of Christmas bird counts, and first to recognize the power of the habitat displays to build public concern about existential threats to bird species.
