Drawing With Machines

By now, you know how much I love the venerable Spirograph. But there’s a long tradition of mechanically aided drawing apparatus and one of the most lovely that I’ve seen recently is the work of James Nolan Gandy.

Aside from being an artist, Gandy is a machinist who creates his own drawing apparatus. I stumbled across his work on Instagram and I’ve been checking out his creations ever since.

One of my favorite things is that he experiments with and augments his machines to create new patterns and ways of making marks. Just over the last few days he has been experimenting with a new attachment that makes dotted or broken lines.

If you know of other folks who make mechanically aided drawing, leave links in the comments so we can all drool over them.
