Mad Quickies: Mural of Brotherhood, Wingnut Candidate, 70s Sci-Fi Art, Chasing Monsters and More!
Howdy, All- Friday called and left a message for you: It’s this set of links to peruse while you decompress from [gestures at the burning horizon] the madness that is the new normal. Let’s get started!
Here’s something beautiful and human and positive. “Over the past two and a half years, nearly 4,000 volunteers have converged on the US/Mexico border to assist artist Enrique Chiu with painting a mural. Chiu began the project on Election Day in 2016, and once his collaborative project is complete, the “Mural of Brotherhood” will span a mile of Mexico’s border frontage in Tijuana.” Read more about A Collaboratively Painted ‘Mural of Brotherhood’ Stretches for Over a Mile on Mexico’s Border.

“Turn the clock back six decades or so and imagine you’re in the nascent computer business. You know your product has immense value, but only to a limited customer base with the means to afford such devices and the ability to understand them and put them to use.” Thus begins, A Faithful Replica of an Early Computer Trainer. Martin O’Leary describes How to make art with a plotter and begins: “I’ve been making art with a plotter for over a year now, first with a cheapo EleksDraw, and then with a fancier AxiDraw V3/A3. I recently (June 2019) sold my old plotter to a friend, and I was writing up some notes on how to get the best out of it. I’m sharing those notes here for the benefit of anyone who’s interested in getting into this stuff.

I am now going to mention a person from the Democrat Debates Part 2 Electric Boogaloo—wait wait don’t click this closed—and you don’t want to miss this. Marianne Williamson. I have no idea why she was on that stage, siphoning off time that we could have better spent listening to Kamala Harris. She was—and I sht you not—a character that i can only describe as vintage Gilda Radner [may that goddess rest in peace.] On twitter, Ellie Hall dug up Williamson’s 2009 tweets and they are ‘chef’s kiss*] DEE-LISH. Please enjoy AMAZING OLD TWEETS BY PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE MARIANNE WILLIAMSON: A THREAD. If you would prefer a running list, read the tweets here.
Oh, and in good conscience, I don’t want to ruin your fun, but I have to state that she is a dangerous person. She is an anti-vaxxer with a national megaphone. Let’s quash this loon bird soon, K?
Bonus: National Treasure Kate McKinnon perfectly impersonates Williamson
[A stack of Stevie Nicks albums to Amy for this.]

I went down a bit of a rabbit hole this week and I found art that is kooky and fun and remarkable and really just gorgeous. Abbreviatedly, it went like this:
Greg Rozeboom sci-fi aficionado and expert GIF-maker on twitter
to
70s Sci-Fi Art on twitter curated by Adam Rowe
to, of course
70s Sci-Fi Art on tumblr, which I didn’t know was still a thing

They snap power lines, topple buildings, inundate roads and smash the work of humans with cool indifference. But to behold a monster storm up close is to taste the infinite. This short, intense film follows storm chaser and Canon photographer Nick Moir, cutting straight to the heart of what fuels his obsession.
