Truth is Powerful and It Prevails. ~ Sojourner Truth

“Truth is Powerful and It Prevails.” ~ Sojourner Truth

Born into slavery and mother to 13 children (all but one sold to slavery) Sojourner Truth was an African American abolishionist and one of the first black women’s rights activists. She is best known for her speach, “Ain’t I Woman” in which she talks of the back-breaking work and suffering she experienced right along side of men, arguing that women, who can work as hard and endure as much, should be treated equally.

I have chosen Sojourner Truth as the subject for my protest sign at the Women’s March in Los Angeles tomorrow for many reasons. One, because I feel it is my responsibility as a white person to hold up and stand behind the black women and other people of color in our communities. What privilege I have, I want to use to the best of my ability and highlighting an oft forgotten black feminist woman, is the least I can do. The other reason, I have chosen Sojourner Truth as my poster is because her quote about truth is something that we all need to remember and to fight to uphold. As I type this, a new presidential regime has entered the White House, one staffed by white nationists (read racists). Already, the official White House website has removed all references to climate change and LGBTQ awareness. They have also posted a message essentially announcing a police state with intentions to give more power to an already criminalized force. Art, humanities, science and many of our civil rights are headed to the chopping block. Never has a more corrupt organization taken power over our country. Lies, racism and cash grabs are at the core of their intentions and feed their propaganda. There are already verifiably false statements on the White House website as the new regime attempts to falsify and bolster it’s power and popularity. One of their main goals is to muddy the truth in order to push their white nationalist agenda. Truth will be at the core of our fight to save democracy and civil rights.

I hold Sojourner Truth’s word up high, because I need to believe them. And we all need to fight now in order to protect truth, equality, civil rights so we the people- all the people, and truth may prevail.
