Some of you probably know there’s a group of folks working on producing puppet videos. This past weekend, they finally got down to committing one of the scripts to film …or disc …or bytes. Something.
Here’s some behind-the-scenes footage (bytage?). Mark of Abrupt Media provided the lighting, camera, directing, technical skills, etc. You’ve probably seen Mark’s work if you’ve seen the Skeptrack room at Dragon*Con, for example. Charles is the puppet maker, head puppeteer, etc. I’m thinking the credits for this will probably need to list “etc” beside nearly everyone’s name.
Now, I wasn’t able to be on set for this. Unfortunately, my day job intervened with a major project roll-out. Shortly after they started, though, Maria (producer, puppeteer, etc (see?)) emailed me this clip so I could see what they were up to. I did not squeee. Did not.
A little while after I got that email, we set up a Google+ hangout so I could sit in on the shoot remotely. We live in the future, people!
At one point, Mark’s phone started ringing.
This next clip is a bit harder to explain. The two sock puppets featured aren’t part of the Cooking With Carl segment. I’m pretty sure they were just playing around. Legend has it, though, that Maria made these puppets from the socks of Phil Plait. I don’t know the whole story behind that and I’m not sure I want to.
I’m not sure how long editing and post-processing takes but I’m pretty sure I’m going to be driving them nuts with “is it done yet?” emails.
If we’re going to do more of these, I am going to need to figure out how to get my head out of shot. I believe this is a relatively common problem but damn, I sucked at it 🙂
This was a crazy amount of fun though!
And yes, I made those sock puppets from Phil Plait’s socks 🙂
That outtake cracked me up!
Puppets are the answer!
I don’t know about Maria, but I’m going to have to start an exercise program exclusively focused on my right shoulder. As noted, that was an INSANE amount of fun. I hope Mark got a lot more of our outtakes on ‘film’.
I would like to demand a puppet doing a spoon-bend please. kthxbai
