FtBCon 2 and Mad Art Lab Unite!

FtBCon is back, and Mad Art Lab is taking over! This weekend, you’ll have the chance to see some of your favorite Mad Art Labbers discuss topics like Artistic Secularism, Growing Up Godless, Social Media at Conferences, and the intersection of Veganism and Humanism!

For those of you who aren’t familiar with FtBCon, it’s an online conference that is completely free to attend. Panels will be hosted in Google Hangouts and can be watched live, or you can catch up afterwards on YouTube. Links to the sessions are posted on the right-hand side of each panel’s individual Lanyrd page. You can even interact in the Pharyngula chat room, and propose questions for the panelists! If Twitter is more your style, you can follow the #FtBCon hashtag.

Here are some of the panels that Labbers will be involved in:

Artistic Secularism

Friday, 1/31/14, 8 PM CST

Panelists: Kyle Borger, Ryan Consell, Ashley Hamer, Lauren Lane and Amy Davis Roth

Many of the prominent voices in the humanist, skeptical, and atheist movements live and work in stereotypically secular fields like science, education, and journalism. Do the experiences of those following the more traditionally spiritual path of the musician, actor, or visual artist have different experiences in expressing their secular bent?

Growing Up Godless

Friday, 1/31/14, 9 PM CST

Panelists: Beth Voigt, Anne Sauer, Amy Davis Roth, Ryan Consell and Stephanie Zvan

Secular communities are rife with stories of people losing, leaving, and fleeing their religion, but what of those who never had one to begin with. What is it like to grow up without a deity? Do they feel that they missed something? Did they ever seek faith? How are their experiences similar and how did they differ? Compare and contrast in groups, 500 word summary due on Monday.

Effective Use of Social Media With Conferences

Saturday, 2/1/14, 5 PM CST

Panelists: Paul Fidalgo, Lauren Lane, Stephanie Zvan and Chelsea Du Fresne

We all know by now that we should be promoting our conferences on social media, but what do we do? We’ll talk about considerations, best practices, and wild ideas before, during, and after a conference.

Veganism & Humanism

Sunday, 2/2/14, 3 PM CST

Panelists: Andy Cheadle-Ford, Ryan Craig, Simon Keegans, Elyse Anders, Amy Davis Roth and Courtney Caldwell

How could veganism & humanism possibly be related? Our panelists don’t think they’re so very different from each other. They will explore the intersections between veganism and humanism, while addressing some of the more privileged aspects of the vegan community.

You should also check out Lanyrd for a full schedule of panels. There’s a phenomenal line-up this year, and of course, it’s free to attend. Other Skepchick bloggers from across the network will be participating as well, so make sure to keep an eye out for their panels, too!

Courtney Caldwell is an intersectional feminist. Her talents include sweary rants, and clogging your social media with pictures of her dogs (and occasionally her begrudging cat). She's also a political nerd, whose far-left tendencies are a little out of place in the deep red Texas.
