College Humor posted a video a while back parodying Gotye’s Somebody I Used to Know. They came up with a great title, but I was disappointed that it was about not using specific knowledge from high school education rather that what it should have been about: Mass-media misrepresentation of scientific findings. OBVIOUSLY
I have corrected their mistake and, in the motif of showing off our ugly things, I have re-recorded the song with the help of some very patient people.
Lyrics:
Now and then I think of when we wrote that paper
About effects of fluoridated milk on mice
We sent it off to be peer reviewed
Just hoping that it wouldn’t be refused
But we got published and thought pride would last forever
Newspapers redacted it for more exciting headlines
Took speculation to be fact, no truth intact
I don’t know why they went and messed with it
Said we’d cured cancer and impotence
My Credibility is gone, my career is over
Why’d they have to go and write that stuff
Ignored statistics, and the implications of our findings
Was it orders from above
Did they think that my conclusions were not good enough
Why did they exaggerate them so
I don’t think they even tried to understand our numbers
It was science not that long ago
Now it’s just some study that I used to know
Now it’s just some study that I used to know
Now it’s just some study that I used to know
Network TV got the story and it played all over
Thought I could correct it when I interviewed on CNN
They don’t care what I had to say
Went and edited the truth away
Now scholars think I’m a wacko
And now people are dead cause of a study that I used to know
Why’d they have to go and write that stuff
Ignored statistics, and the implications of our findings
Was it orders from above
Did they think that my conclusions were not good enough
Why did they exaggerate them so
I don’t think they even tried to understand our numbers
It was science not that long ago
Now it’s just some study that I used to know
Now it’s just some study that I used to know
Now it’s just some study that I used to know
That was great! 😀
Also, I just realized that the intro to “Somebody That I Used to Know” is “Baa Baa Black Sheep”. o.O
I totally just spent the past ten minutes singing your lyrics along with a karaoke version of the song I found on YouTube. =)
Ugly and great!
