The Hyrax

A while ago, we were discussing vintage illustrations of rodents on the Mad Art Lab back-channel (as you do) and the subject of the hyrax came up (as it does). And Donna pointed out that “hyrax” is a very Seussian name. So I wrote up a little poem and recruited Cloe to illustrate it.

And here’s the result, which we had totally, totally planned to post today in honor of Dr Seuss’ birthday. It was definitely not a mad scramble at the last minute. Definitely not that.

  1. Okay,

Steve and Chloe, I don’t know you, but you’ve just given me one of the best presents I never knew I wanted. Hyraxes have been a favorite of mine since I saw them in Kenya as a child, and their appearance versus their phylogenetic relationships to elephants and manatees is an example of evolution I’ve made numerous times to my students. That you’ve gone the extra mile to create a Seussian ditty complete with illustrations of one of my favorite animals … just let me buy you a drink sometime. Thank you.
