Flashback: “Statute of Liver-Tea”

IMG_5199
Here is Briar, posing as the “Statute of Liver-Tea”; her words at the time. This is exactly how I found her when I peeked in her room. She took it all very seriously. She was only 3 years old at the time of this photo but can still distinctly remember portraying “Liberty”.

I’m still on vacation this week! Fortunately, I have an oldie-but-goodie for you. This is one of my favorite photos of all time just because it kind of encompasses my girls and the way they play completely.

This photo was taken back in January 2010. I had been teaching my oldest, Zoë, about the Statue of Liberty. Once school was over, the two older girls went off and played in their room and the twins went and played in their room. I walked by the twins’ room, and lo-and-behold, Briar was portraying the “Statute of Liver-Tea” complete with robe, crown, and torch. It was pretty cool to see that she had picked-up on what Zoë had been learning in school.

The Statue of Liberty has a wonderful history. There is a documentary (I showed it to the girls back in 2010) by Ken Burns that is a fascinating look at the making of the statue. I highly recommond watching it. It is currently available for streaming on Netflix, though streaming ends July 1,  2013.

As of now, the Statue of Liberty is closed down due to damages at Ellis and Liberty Islands which were caused by Hurricane Sandy, but it will re-open July 4, 2013. Yay!

What kind of a mother/photographer would I be if I didn’t finish the job by creating a photoshopped version? I created this back in 2010 and I’m still pretty satisfied with the results.

I promise a brand new photo session bursting with skepticism for you next week! I already know what I am going to do. I hope to see you then.
