Trolls, Evolutionary Psych, and Homeopathy: SkepchickCon, Part 3

Caveman psychology?

This is the last installment of my SkepchickCon 2013 photo series. I will be discussing three pictures that I did for the Con and explain the meaning behind them.

Remember, SkepchickCon is July 4-7 in Minneapolis.

First, thanks to all who bid on my art for the SkepchickCon auction. All three pieces sold. Please check out the current auction up for SkepchickCon; our very own Mad Labber Anne Sauer will create a custom cocktail recipe designed just for you!

Now, onto this week’s business. The following photos are the last three of the eight photos I did for SkepchickCon. You can check out my previous posts about the other photos I did here (GMO, UFO, and Shape-Shifter) and here (Palm Reader and Religion vs. Skepticism).

Evolutionary Psychology

One of the topics that will be covered at SkepchickCon is evolutionary psychology. Wikipedia states that evolutionary psychology “is an approach in the social and natural sciences that examines psychological traits such as memory, perception, and language from a modern evolutionary perspective. It seeks to identify which human psychological traits are evolved adaptations – that is, the functional products of natural selection or sexual selection.” This is probably the topic I’d most like to hear discussed at SkepchickCon, if I were able to attend. I’d love to learn more about this and get the Skepchicks’ perspective.

The problem with this topic was how to capture it visually. Rob had the genius idea that we should have a caveman psychologist listening to a patient. We bought him a wig and I added a bit of make-up to create this caveman. We tried to base the look of this caveman off of the Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer character from Saturday Night Live, played by Phil Hartman. I then did some Photoshop magic to help give Rob caveman-like features.

Homeopathy

This one was easy. I took a jar and filled it with water. I then looked up “homeopathy” on a few websites, took all the ridiculously jazzy words they use, and put them on the label.

I burnt the edges of the label to give it the “old-timey” feel.

Trolls

Eek! A grumpy old troll who lives under a bridge? Nah, it’s just a grumpy old internet troll who lives in his parent’s basement. The Skepchicks will take on this topic at SkepchickCon and discuss what it’s like to deal with the trolls and how to overcome their attacks.

I think it was the photos I took during this session that cracked me up the most. Rob was the perfect internet troll, complete with pajamas pants and a blanket wrapped around him (much like a cowl). If you look closely you can witness the troll in his natural habitat as he preys on the Skepchick website, waiting for the next blog post to terrorize.

This concludes my three-part series about the photos for I created for SkepchickCon. I hope you enjoyed reading about the meaning behind the photos and that you’ll take the opportunity to check out SkepchickCon.
