Mad Quickies: Art of Migrant Children, Digital Archive of Radical Publications, Blue Moroccan Village and More

Hey hey, my friends. I decided that if you need to see beauty as much as I do, then that should loosely be the theme of this Mad batch of links. What with all the ugliness int he world, we need this more than ever. But first, I want to share a very serious item with you. This is a brief but noteworthy article on a topic for which I am barely able to shape words.

The Smithsonian Museum Is Interested in Acquiring Art Made by Detained Migrant Children.

“The works were drawn by children, between the ages of 10 and 11, at the Catholic Charities Humanitarian Respite Center in McAllen, Texas. This is where many families go after being released from Customs and Border Protection (CBP) custody. While there, the kids were asked to show what their time in the detention center was like and did so on canvases.”

This is something quite remarkable. A Big Digital Archive of Independent & Alternative Publications: Browse/Download Radical Periodicals Printed from 1951 to 2016

“Today’s media landscape stands in stark contrast to that of the mid-to-late twentieth century, when independent and alternative presses flourished, disseminating art, poetry, and radical politics, and offering custom platforms for marginalized communities and dissenters. While the future of independent media seems, today, unclear at best, a look back at the indie presses of decades past may show a way forward.”

Really- take a scroll through these examples and visit Independent Voices, “an open access collection of an alternative press”. This is how subversion looked before the internet.

Something utterly beautiful and magical for you: The Vibrant Blue Hues of Morocco’s Chefchaouen Village Captured in Photographs by Tiago & Tania

Photography duo Tania De Pascalis and Tiago Marques, known as Tiago & Tania, spent six days capturing the blue-tinted stone architecture of Chefchaouen, a 550-year-old village located in the mountains of Morocco. The photo series presents an interesting juxtaposition of everyday life within a fairytale-like aesthetic created by the town’s trademark cerulean walls, which have earned it the nickname “Blue Pearl.”

These blues are as refreshing as it gets without diving into a bracingly cool, clear, mountain lake. Enjoy!
