GABA GABA Hey

Hey there friends and fans of art and science! Today, I bring you a drawing that is called, GABA GABA Hey!

Why yes, it does reference the Ramones and their catchy 1977 tune “Gabba Gabba Hey (Pinhead)” but because this here is an art and science project it also references some science!

The robot waitress is carrying a tray with a flask. In that flask (and drawn twice in the image, get it?) is the chemical shorthand for the neurotransmitter knows as GABA, or more specifically, gamma-aminobutyric acid. GABA is chemical messenger that is used in many parts of the brain for regulatory function and it is quite famous for it’s role in controlling anxiety! The GABA mechanism is what is targeted by benzodiazopine drugs that are often used to treat anxiety disorders. Drugs you may have heard of, like Xanax and Clonazepam. GABA is also affected by good old fashioned alcohol. This robot waitress is delivering a one-two punch of the neurotransmitter GABA. On it’s own, this theoretical cocktail wouldn’t do much without an antagonist or blocker to affect the receptors but I thought a robotic bar story would be a fun way to bring attention to all of the different chemicals in our body that are known to make us feel good.

In the weeks to come I will bring more robots and neurotransmitters associated with happiness and pleasure to your attention. Until then, please print and color this anxiety reducing illustration and have a stress free day!

The printable drawing is attached to my Patreon post. If you print it please consider pledging a buck or two. Thanks!
