Fog: My Head in the Clouds

IMG_5714A couple of weeks ago we had some major fog happening down here in Texas. Where we live, when fog occurs, it usually lifts a couple of hours before noon. This fog though, this fog was sticking around all day, for several days. It was very unusual. So what do you think I did about it? Took pictures, of course!

Fog is part of the stratus family of clouds; these are the type of shapeless clouds that make the sky completely grey in appearance on a really cloudy day. There are many weather situations in which fog occurs. One reason fog occurs is when weather changes drastically and water vapor is cooled, like, I don’t know, you have 70 degree weather during the day and then it drops down to the 30’s at night and the ground happens to be moist. That’s what has been going on here in Texas and that’s why it kept happening. Fog also occurs when an old 3D engine is avoiding rendering detail at a distance.

I went outside on one of the foggy days and just walked around my yard and started snapping away. I was shocked when I stepped outside that I couldn’t even see our neighbors house across the street event though it was around 1:00 p.m.

It was striking how absolutely peaceful it was while I was taking these photographs. The fog creates a calm that simply envelops you. Despite the beauty and wonder fog can hold, it can be a sinister weather pattern causing traffic problems due to poor visibility. Watching this video about the foggiest places on earth makes me simultaneously grateful I don’t live there and wish I lived there; I’m grateful I don’t have to drive in the fog, but I wish I could take some awesome pictures of bridges and buildings shrouded in fog.

I enjoyed these few days of strangely foggy weather, but I was glad when the fog finally lifted.

  1. I used to work nights, and I remember a few times walking home at 7am with fog. I lived downtown and it was amazing to see the buildings disappear, it changed the look of the whole city.

  2. I’m hoping sometime, while on vacation in a city somewhere, that there’s a foggy day. I just think taking pictures of skyscrapers and bridges vanishing into the fog would be so breathtaking.
