Vote!

Election Day is here! If you haven’t already voted early or voted this morning, what are you waiting for? From what we’ve been hearing, the lines are long and there might be people trying dishonestly to keep your voice from being heard, so plan carefully and be prepared–do you know where your polling place is? Do you know if you need ID? If you’re worried about disenfranchisement, here are some facts/resources:

  • Find your Fucking Polling Place
  • 886ourvote.org has a state-by-state guide to polling places and identification requirements
  • (Or you can call 1-866-OUR-VOTE for any election-related assistance)
  • Federal law says that everyone in line when the polls close has the right to vote. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise (if a poll worker tries to, get their name and picture and report them), and don’t leave the line!
  • UPDATE: if you’re turned away at the polling place for any reason, ask to file a provisional ballot, ask for the name of the person who turned you away, and call 866-MYVOTE1.

Share more resources and your voting stories in the comments!

After the jump, enjoy They Might Be Giants’ catchy, skeptical new tune “Vote or Don’t.” (But seriously, VOTE!)

Vote and don’t
Do what strangers tell you
Vote although
There’s something I could tell you
You might vote for someone else
And I might want to change your mind
So vote and don’t today

Vote and know
It might make a difference
Vote and know
It might not make a difference
You might see the contradiction
But they’re not talking to you
Vote and don’t today

Vote and don’t
Vote and don’t today

  1. =D

I cast my vote about an hour ago. My polling place is less than two blocks from my apartment and rarely has lines, but I could see when I was feeding my ballot int the machine that at least 70 people had already voted in the first hour of the polls being open.

  2. Today was a bit crazy. Being on one of the least busy bus routes in town, I was surprised to find the bus packed both on my way into campus and my way back home by people going to the airport to vote.

I was also heartened by the number of signs for Gary Johnson. Even if you don’t agree with him, I feel that this country could have used a 3rd or 4th voice in the debates this year. Maybe I’m just disillusioned, but the two party system seems broken.
