The Mad Art Lab Secular Christmas Playlist, 2014 Version

Atheist ChristmasIt can be awkward to be a nonbeliever during the Christmas season. That’s why last year, we gave you a Spotify playlist full of Christmas songs that were totally free of gods, baby gods, mothers of gods, donkeys of gods, stars that gods supposedly put up in the sky to show god-loving kings where the baby god was hanging out…100% god-free.

The only problem was that we got the idea really late in the season, and only posted it on Christmas Day. That didn’t leave very much time to get in the secular Christmas spirit. Luckily, this year we’re on top of it.

But wait! There’s another massive benefit to posting the playlist this early in December: you can suggest songs! If you have a favorite god-free Christmas carol that we didn’t include, let us know in the comments below.

And have a very merry Christmas!

  1. Not a carol, but a lovely seasonal song: Tim Minchin’s “White Wine in the Sun”

  2. Can we replace the Brenda Lee version of Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree with the version by Drunk Kim and Marty Wilde Coming Home On The Train? That’s my fave.

  3. tsoebirk – Already there! I love that one too.

Reinder – the list has plenty of doubles (there are only so many Christmas songs, after all), so no need for replacement. But I can’t seem to find the one you’re referring to on Spotify. If you can, give me a link and I’ll add it!

  4. Vienne Teng’s “Atheist Christmas Carol”?

Additionally, the band moe. covered “We’re a Couple of Misfits” from Rudolph.

  5. No Vienne Teng on Spotify (I considered making another playlist on YouTube, but its streaming service is so new…maybe next year), but I added We’re A Couple of Misfits and two more from that moe. holiday album! It also inspired me to add the original recording of Linus & Lucy. Thanks Cara!

  6. Last year, I added the She & Him version of Baby It’s Cold Outside because the genders are swapped so I felt like it made the lyrics less problematic. This year, I also added the Louis & Ella version because…I just had to.
