The future of puppetry?

You guys! I love this so much! Check out this video of Emily Gobeille and Theo Watson puppeteering a virtual bird with Microsoft Kinect. Emily and Theo do some other incredible interactive artwork as well.

I cannot wait for this to be readily available. The possibilities are really endless. It also makes you wonder what exactly constitutes puppetry? Is this puppetry even though there isn’t an actual puppet? Or is this basically a poor-man’s motion capture animation?

My brain tends to be tied to puppetry with foam and strings but maybe that’s just me not embracing what are obviously very exciting opportunities for new technology to change how we make puppetry. What do you think?

Also, if you’re looking for more ‘traditional’ puppetry, check out the latest outtake from our Death by Puppets group. We’ll be launching with a full video soon, I promise!
