Teacup and Friend

Ok so this post is going to be very short I’m afraid, as this week rather got away from me. Also, the below was very nearly a painting of a cup that had once had tea in it due to technical difficulties that required me to restart my computer a couple of times while I stared at the tea I really wanted to drink.

That’s another place traditional media beats digital: paper doesn’t require software updates.

And…yeah this is where I completely give up on the food theme and throw in a monster drawing. Because who doesn’t like those? Terrible people, that’s who.

Human hands make everything creepier, truefact.
Human hands make everything creepier, truefact.

There is a setting in my brain that defaults to evil dino-birds when I don’t have anything in particular in mind to draw.

I don’t think this is a problem.

When drawing these monsters I do try to aim for a skeleton that’s at least plausible, if not likely. I flirted with the idea of becoming a Bio/medical illustrator in college, and while I didn’t end up pursuing that career the classes I took with that in mind drilled into me the idea that in order to draw convincing figures/objects/spaces you have to understand the underlying structure.

  1. Tea and bird monsters? It’s like you posted this just for me. 🙂

Relatedly, are you familiar with Daily Bird Beast? Fantastic and one of my favourite art blogs, you may enjoy it: http://dailybirdbeast.tumblr.com/

Nonsensical anatomy and biomechanics can be loads of fun, but when it needs to make sense, it drives me batty when research and observation is omitted just because it’s a ‘made up’ creature – there are so many artists (and especially CG animation folk) that seem not to understand that the ‘backwards knee’ description of dog-legged isn’t literal!

  2. Seelix–It may not be evil, but it’s certainly up to no good! It has thumbs. Thumbs lead to Mischief.

quarksparrow–Thanks, I’ve not heard of that blog before but I’ll check it out! Unfortunately the monster that’s been ruined for me is dragons with six limbs. They really should have a much weirder looking musculature than they’re typically drawn with.
