Science is Not the Enemy

For reasons, partially religious, partially ignorant, partially intentially denialist, the conservative Republican government set on taking over my country is very anti-science. Climate change is being framed as a hoax. The new head of the department of education wants to teach the Bible as fact in the classroom. Coal and outdated energy sources are being pushed as necessary and good when it’s really just a cash grab with no care for the environmental repercussions. Scientists across the country and in Canada are frantically trying to safeguard and copy USA’s scientific climate data (and hopefully other research) prior to the inauguration date for fear of the work and knowledge within being destroyed. Science is being dressed as a hoax and presented as the enemy. This should be considered  unacceptable by any thinking person out there. Science is how one determines the difference between quality, factual information and false, incomplete or imagined ideas. Science separates the real from the fake. Science is a method of finding truth. Science builds upon a solid base of tested information that allows us to innovate and move forward and progress. Often fluid and changing and while sometimes confusing and complex, science is not the enemy. Science, technology, engineering, art, and math are all things we need to survive as a culture. Without them, we will find humanity in serious danger. Ignorance is not bliss, it is the hallmark of the lost on the path to the past and likely destruction. Willful ignorance or suppression of information is the enemy. Fight against it whenever you see it. Accidental or situational ignorance is something we can fix, so please save, teach and share all the aspects of STEAM when you can, while you can.
