MAL-o-ween Costume Review of Awesomeness

Welcome, November! That fine autumn month, full of pumpkin spice and everything nice. But wait, what’s that I hear? The sound of… CHRISTMAS MUSIC? Waitwaitwait, I’m not done with Halloween yet!

Personally, I’m a bit resistant to jingling bells prior to Thanksgiving week, but YMMV. Since Halloween may be the craftiest of holidays, we’re still hanging on to a bit of that spirit over here at the Lab. D’you wanna see how we all spent last weekend? Of course you do.

Now, we all know the finest Halloween costumes are still being tweaked as we walk out the door, so photos are generally not taken until day-of. And then we’re out at a party, and hand someone else our phone, and… well… maybe we should just take selfies. Basically, just know that most of us did not have professional photographers following us around on Saturday. 😀

And with that caveat, here we go!

Many of us have seen Ryan’s costume before, but perhaps not in such a corporate environment.

Julie says, “Here’s a terrible phone cam shot of me taken by my daughter of me in my Robot Monster costume. It’s from the bad 50’s sci fi movie of that name. It combines a gorilla costume, space helmet, theremin sound FX (off the phone) and bubbles.”

Lauren: QUEEN OF FLAIR.

MAL contributor Lauren dressed as a Chotchkie’s employee (Office Space) in a green and white striped shirt with suspenders covered in "flair" buttons.

It was inevitable that Katie would eventually do the Fiona Apple squid hat. I am uncertain as to the significance of the hula girl as makeup brush.

Chris just yells, “THIS IS ME NOW!!”

Brian and Kelly fought. Epically.

HELLO, MCFLY!

dis is me dressed as Marty McFly.
Marty supposedly lived in California, I understand, but was wearing UMPTEEN LAYERS: a tshirt, a button-down, a denim jacket and a down vest. WTF. Let’s just say I wasn’t cold. In Chicago. In October.

Amy and Johnny stayed in to hand out candy, but the Force is strong with them.

Jamie is FURIOSA! No more need be said!

Julia as Slash. Because how could you not?

Olivia is JOY! (And I still really, really need to see Inside Out!)

…and then we have the Bruces. Which someone will hopefully explain to me a bit more in the comments.

First up, Nicole is a Monty Python Bruce. Lacking Fosters, she had to make do with Australian wine.

Next we have Liz and Tim as two additional Bruces. Or two sides of a single Bruce. Or… never mind. A Bruce party was held. Many Bruces were there. What sort of Bruce would you be?

Finally, even pets can get in on the Halloween action! This is Nicole’s WonderDog, Macey. On the sort of lovely campus one gets to run around on when one’s human is a brilliant professor.

Do you have a great costume to share? Let’s hang on to Halloween a bit longer! Post your photos in the comments, which are new and improved WITH PEEKATURES!

Beth Voigt

Beth is a graphic designer in Chicago, a superhero in her own mind, and absolutely nothing on TV. She wrangles fonts professionally, pummels code amateurishly, and has been known to shove fire in her face for fun. Fond of volunteering, late-night bursts of productivity, and making snacks, she dislikes grocery shopping and sticky public transit and is only on her second smartphone. Her opinion is that you should try everything twice; if you don't like it, you were probably doing it wrong the first time around. If external links are your thing, here are links to Twitter and Instagram, and you can support her ongoing weirdness by buying her a coffee or six.
