Mad Quickies: Oceanic Glass, Millennial Whoop, Climate Inaction Figures, Pier Puzzle, Cosmic Evolution Video and More!

Hiya’ gang! So hey, if you live in the States, I do hope this is a non-labor Labor Day for you. Frankly, I have plans to clean my studio—I mean, serious stuff like purging boxes of software—Quark and Paint [wut?!] and Freehand. Whether you are currently sipping a cappuccino at a beachside bistro or pouring a cuppa joe while starting your work week, take a few minutes and revel in these luxurious Quickies. Shall we?

I agree with Mad Art Beth’s caution that we should “stop assigning things to millennials with the perpetual undertone that they’re just inherently bad/lazy.” That said, this is a thing — “The Millennial Whoop” — and now you can’t unhear it. Via Beth

Artist Ginny Ruffner’s “Poetic Hybrids” exhibit “makes concepts of genetic modification, augmented reality and sophisticated 3D modeling accessible enough for a child to enjoy it.”

Artist Wenyi uses the bits of cardboard he finds on his walks, sketches on them, and places them back in their original location.

A line of toys whose time has come. Climate Inaction Figures – “toys based on politicians messing up the world.” [vid included]

This is so fantastic but you have to embiggen to really appreciate this poster: A Diagrammatical Dissertation on Notable Lines of Cinematic Action.

So…why does all the writing in comic books look like that? Vox’s Phil Edwards looked into it and found an aesthetic shaped by comics culture, technology, and really cheap paper.

Infinitude is a meditation on the cosmic evolution of matter and energy over time. Experimental filmmaking techniques such as time-lapse, high-speed, and stop-motion photography were used to photograph handmade props, fluid dynamics, and angular momentum. Infinitude is a handmade representation of the exponential growth of complexity in the cosmos.

Physics Girl asks…

Can you solve this pier puzzle?

from the page

This math brainteaser challenges you to find a simple, elegant solution to a seemingly complex problem! Can you figure it out? There are two towns near a shore. They want to build a pier on the shoreline with a path connecting the pier to each town. They want to use as little material as possible, so they need to put the pier in a location on the shoreline that minimizes the total length of both paths added together. Where should they put the pier? This video was inspired by a brainteaser in the book “Brainteaser Physics: Challenging Physics Puzzlers” by Göran Grimvall.
