Scientists find a gene linked to migraines. I find this fascinating because there is a long history of migraines with aura that run in my mother’s side of the family. My recurring migraines have recently led me to try to express in a painting what it looks like when I experience the visual disturbances called auras. The featured image is my painting you can click here to see a larger image. What I find interesting is that for years people just like me have tried to represent in 2D what has been happening in their visual cortex so that other people could understand the phenomenon in a way that brain scans alone could not do. Water bear has what it takes!

• This link along with the images have been floating around for a few weeks now but if you haven’t had a chance, do take a look at recently unclassified photos of a spy plane that crashed in area 51. The photos are beautiful and the subject matter, well it just kicks ass!

  1. Wow – I was taken aback by how closely your painting and some of the others in the slideshow match my experience. I don’t get migraines often, and when I do they’re not nearly as severe as many other people’s, but I do get the aura and it’s always unsettling.

  2. Yeah, it’s the going partially blind part that always freaks me out the most. The headaches suck but they aren’t as scary to me as the vibrating lights. Glad you related to the painting. That means I did good. 🙂
