Lab Track: Africa

Last week, the lab track featured a guy who uses nature to create music. This week, I give you a group who uses traditional instruments–their hands and feet–to recreate nature.

Perpetuum Jazzile is a choir from Slovenia known for their avante-garde approach to choral performance. One only needs to check out their section list–which includes sopranos, altos, tenors, basses, and beatbox–to figure out this group’s MO. This particular selection makes up the introduction to their performance of Toto’s Africa, which you can see in full here. Enjoy!

This has been another installment of Monday Lab Tracks. Send us your musical recommendations through our contact link at the top of the page, and tell us what you think of the song in the comments below!

Ashley Hamer

Ashley Hamer (aka Smashley) is a saxophonist and writer living in Chicago, where she performs regularly with the funk band FuzZz and jazz ensemble Big Band Boom. She also does standup comedy, sort of, sometimes. Her tenor saxophone's name is Ladybird.
