$1000 The Hard Way…

…$0.11 at a time.

OK, I’m not even sure what this is (I couldn’t even figure out which category to file this under) but I feel compelled to mention it. At about 3:00pm Eastern today, I saw this on Twitter.

Obviously a joke, right? Sure but my first reaction was to send $0.11 as a joke. Before I could decide whether or not to do it, though, I saw this.

That tipped the scales for me. I got on PayPal and sent my contribution. And it looks like I wasn’t the only one.

As of this writing, Jenny’s accumulated about $250. I have no idea whether she’ll actually get to $1000 but I’m not sure it matters. See, what appeals to me about this is that it never occurred to me you could really do this. I mean who in their right mind would ever send eleven cents via PayPal? Better yet, who would think of getting a few thousand of their closest friends to each send eleven cents?

I don’t know if this is a stupid joke gone wrong, a really creative fundraising tactic, or some bizarre performance art piece but I’m really looking forward to seeing how this plays out.

And, y’know, if all this happens to put you in a charitable mood, you might
consider heading over to Skepchick and contributing to SkepchickCon

. Just sayin’…

  1. I wonder if this has something to do with paypal fees or something? Like trying to circumvent some… thing? Hmm interesting. Also, I am
    now following her.

  2. I’ve been reading The Blogess’ blogs (she does several) for a while now and she is hilarious. (Check out her posts about James Garfield, for instance.) I have no idea what she’ll do with that $1K, but it will either be spent on something incredibly stupid which will serve as fodder that will make me fall out of my chair laughing or it will be something charitable. She does some very good things for people through her blog.
